Target Audience Research

So who will actually be watching this?

I feel like one of the most important aspect of making ANYTHING is deciding who the target audience is. People seem to brush over this part, but to me, it's more important than people make it to be. If you don't establish a target audience, how are you supposed to figure out what you want to include in your product?
For our film, Shutter, we will be using a sci-fi/fantasy genre. After doing some research, the target audience for this genre is people between the ages of 18-24. Usually, males are targeted for this genre, but for our film, females are targeted as well. I feel like those where men are the bigger advocates are movies like Alien or Blade Runner.

Shutter will have a surplus of components that make up this genre combination, leaving viewers excited. Of course, we are just making two trailers for the film, but after watching, the plot and characters will be clear. The multiple worlds, dimensions, and narratives will be something that influences our target audience to become engaged. Young adults and teens are those targeted most with our genre and they look for imaginative worlds and fast-paced storylines. We will make sure our film/trailers have both. When making our trailers, we will definitely keep in mind the idea that this demographic craves excitement and special effects. While we don't have a full production crew or the ability to make larger than life special effects, we will attempt to add in editing and the thrill aspects that this group looks for.

Social media target audience

As I said in my last post, Abby and I are using Instagram as our social media tool for that aspect of the portfolio project. Research has shown that this platform bodes well with Gen Z and Millenials. This is around 18-34 years old, which is right in our age range for Shutter.

When deciding on Instragam, I was thinking about other social media platforms and their target audience. Twitter (or X) targets 25-34 year olds, which was too old for our piece. Then there's Facebook. This was also seen to be 25-34 years old, but this platform just didn't feel right to promote our sci-fi/fantasy piece. Abby and I are more comfortable using Instagram, but it also made sense for our target audience. There was also the idea of using TikTok, which would fit the age demographics of Shutter, but when it comes to marketing and promotion, Instagram gives us more opportunities. We will be using the story feature to communicate with our audience, as well as posting on our feed. This part would be mainly used for pictures or graphics while the story will feature videos that will be saved as highlights.

It's important to distinguish who you want to watch your film and who it will connect with the most. That is why I found it crucial to do more research on target audiences. Check back next week when we will be posting our storyboards and shot lists!
