Table of Contents Ideas

 The Final Outline

In my posts throughout the week I have highlighted each major aspect of the magazine. This being the title page and the spread. The time has come to delve into the table of contents. I left this one for last because I have never really had any experience working with this part of a magazine before, but after looking at some examples, I think it's time to start coming up with ideas.

My main inspiration comes from past projects. There are so many directions to go in with this part that it is kinda overwhelming.
This picture is from a past project for a cooking magazine. My favorite part of this page is the close up image of the dessert on the right because it is like a sneak peek to what readers would be seeing when they flip the page. For my magazine I would insert different story titles into the table of contents and put the spring football story somewhere in there. For this particular example, the student used page 34 as their actual story which is something I will do (taking a deeper page and using it for my spread rather than page 1).
This is another example from a past AS portfolio that takes a more simplistic approach. I like how the numbers are aligned on the left but I think I would rather use a photo in some way on the page rather than leave it blank. The first example I showed had two pages for the table of contents but I like having one page instead. Also, each example has the title of the story assigned to that page AND a description of each under it. I would probably do this too and just describe the stories that go with whatever team or athlete I wrote about. I like how this example took page numbers that are in order rather than sporadically placed like the other magazine.
This is the first concept I came up with and I have seen it used in many magazines before but I'm not sure it works with the mood I'm trying to get across. It just doesn't feel very "athletic magaziney." It's still an option but not my favorite.
This was actually the second concept I came up with and I like it a lot more than the one above. I'm not sure how I am going to incorporate a photo, maybe in the background? But that might be too much happening. One idea I had is to take a picture and increase the transparency and maybe even change it to black and white coloring. I've said this a few times now but we'll have to see what it looks like in Canva.

That's it for the outlines! Hope you enjoyed getting an inside look into my brain and thought process. Check back next week for when I actually start putting everything together!
