Music Marketing #2

The Music Marketing Project was a lengthy process that had a positive result. What I learned from this project I will use further in this class and career as a whole. It will also help with the incoming Cambridge portfolio.

The research aspect of the marketing project was the part where the group had the most cohesion. We all knew what our roles were and how to contribute to the assignment. After choosing the song that we would be working with, Fire by Beth Ditto, we began researching case studies. These groups that made up the case studies would later be used in our presentation to market our artist. The four of us split and took a different artist/group within the genre, Indie Rock, to research. This was an effective strategy as we were able to get this part done quickly and the information was useful. Using what we found on the case studies, we could begin thinking about the presentation and marketing our artist.

John took the lead on the brainstorming/planning part of the project. We all began thinking about what our story would consist of, and he came up with an idea that we all could agree on. Once that was out of the way, he typed a detailed list of what would take place and when in the music video. Following that, I worked on the storyboard. At this point it had seemed as if John and I had taken control of the project as we were the most invested. Creating the storylines and storyboard took the majority of two days, making less time for us to work on the presentation. After planning what the story would entail, I worked on the presentation slides and social media promoting the artist. While I was doing this, Nate worked on the artist's website and John continued planning out the music video.  Looking back, splitting everything like this was not as beneficial as it seemed in the moment. This is because it was more difficult to work together on parts like the slides.

Producing the music video is the aspect of this project I felt we had the most fun and creativity with. For example, we chose a spot to film and had freedom over what we shot and how we would use it. We went to a street near the school that is rarely visited at 8 am to guarantee access to the venue. Our filming took about 3 hours in total. We followed the plan that John had laid out in class previously and completed the shots written. Our shooting process worked well and we all worked together cohesively. We had settled on the idea that Rui would edit the music video prior to us completing the filming portion. Based on the shots we recorded, I was excited to see how it would come out.

It had taken Rui around 3 days to edit the clips. Once he finished this, I had completed the majority of the presentation slides. Once the group looked over the video and made a few changes, I inserted it onto its slide. After this, I finished the remaining slides that needed to be completed after the music video was done.

I had not felt that the presentation went as smoothly as it could have, but I was proud of how it came
out. Before we went up to present, we decided on who would say which slides. We explained our marketing project to the class and they seemed to enjoy it. The final product of the slides came out well, but they could have been better. For example, we could have included a background on our chosen genre as well as more information on the case studies. Besides this, it turned out well and I am proud of what we created.
